Is the "432Hz Myth" Actually Total Nonsense?

March 3, 2026

Personally, I think the whole “432Hz is the universe’s frequency” thing is a total nonsense.

Seconds are defined by humans, and Hz is defined by humans. So where on earth did this idea that “432Hz is the frequency of the universe” even come from?

What People Are Actually Arguing About

When people argue about 432Hz versus 440Hz, they aren’t even talking about a single standalone frequency. They are talking about defining the root tuning for the entire scale, where A4 equals either 440Hz or 432Hz.

If we are strictly talking about a single, isolated frequency, any frequency, whether it’s 432Hz or 440Hz, will create its own unique geometric pattern in water.

The real issue here is chords. True acoustic “chaos” or tension happens when you layer more than one note. It’s the disharmonic waveforms created when two or more frequencies collide because their periodic cycles don’t align.

Just Intonation vs Equal Temperament

If we are talking about A=432Hz versus A=440Hz under Just Intonation (where scales are calculated using simple integer ratios), strictly speaking, the integer ratios are calculated relative to the root note. So whether the root is 432Hz or 440Hz doesn’t change the purity of the resulting chord ratios.

Under Equal Temperament, everything is just logarithmically chopped into 12 equal parts within an octave. The chords are going to be pretty much equally dissonant either way.

Yet most of those comparison videos on the internet are still playing in Equal Temperament. If you think it sounds more “harmonious,” it’s highly likely just because the pitch is lower (by 31.76 cents) or the instrument string tension is looser, making it sound warmer.

So Where’s the “432 Advantage” Then?

If 432 really has any “factor advantage,” it only exists under Pythagorean tuning (3-limit).

Pythagorean tuning only allows factors of 2 and 3 to derive the entire scale. Since 432 = 2⁴ × 3³, when you keep stacking perfect fifths to derive notes, 432 guarantees integer results even at the deepest interval levels.

But in modern music and psychoacoustics:

  1. We don’t necessarily use pure integers in digital audio. Floating-point numbers can handle everything.
  2. The brain listens to ratios (A/B), not whether the root frequency can be evenly divided.

So 432 is genuinely a number friendly to ancient Greek integer aesthetics. There are no decimals to worry about. But in physical acoustics, chord resonance, or reducing cognitive load? It produces no meaningful difference in physiological response compared to 440.

What About the Schumann Resonance Argument?

Some even claim 432Hz is a multiple of the Schumann resonance, rounding it up to 8Hz for convenience.

But the actual Schumann resonance is 7.83Hz, which makes its multiple 430.65Hz, not 432Hz.

What Actually Matters

A single frequency definitely alters human perception and has different resonant frequencies depending on the medium.

But ratios, the harmonic series, and the overall structural framework are what actually matter.
